  3. What does the service contract actually cover? Is it parts and labor, or just parts? Is the response time guaranteed in writing? What's the typical lead time for a technician visit?
  4. How does this machine fail? Ask it directly. A dealer who can't answer probably doesn't know—and that tells you something about the dealer too.
  5. How long will the manufacturer support this model? When it's discontinued, how many more years of parts availability are promised?

To be fair, I understand why people search for the lowest price first. It's the only number that's easy to compare. Granted, budgets are real—I've operated under tight ones. But the lowest entry price has a way of becoming the highest cost of ownership.

We finally committed to a flatbed UV printer this year. I won't claim the Mutoh XpertJet 461UF was the cheapest option on paper—it wasn't. But when we projected five years of ink consumption, maintenance, expected downtime, and print head replacements, the total cost of ownership turned out to be the most predictable. And predictability, in a production environment, has a real monetary value.
