Why Mutoh’s Lineup Proves There’s No ‘One Printer to Rule Them All’

There’s no such thing as a ‘universal’ printing solution—and that’s fine

I manage procurement for a mid-size print shop. We’re not huge—about 40 employees, serving local businesses and regional signage chains. I’ve been tracking our hardware and consumables budget for six years now (roughly $180,000 in cumulative spending). So when people ask me about Mutoh’s lineup—especially the DTG automatic printers, the DTF transfer machines, and the UV flatbed models like the XpertJet 661UF—I have a strong opinion.

Here it is: the smartest move you can make is to stop hunting for ‘one machine that does everything’ and instead match your workflow to the specialist tool designed for it.

Mutoh happens to sell a lot of specialist tools. But that’s not the point. The point is that when you try to make one machine do DTG, DTF, and UV flatbed work—even if it ‘can’ technically handle all three—you almost always sacrifice either quality, throughput, or total cost of ownership (TCO) on one or more of those applications. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve tracked the numbers.

DTG vs DTF vs UV: three different problems, three different machines

Let me break down what I mean by looking at three print technologies we use in our shop: direct-to-garment (DTG), direct-to-film (DTF), and UV flatbed printing. Each solves a different customer pain point. And each requires a machine with a different set of priorities.

DTG automatic printers: built for high-touch fabric, not speed-at-any-cost

We run a Mutoh DTG automatic printer for our garment decoration jobs—mainly custom t-shirts and hoodies for local sports teams. The key here is ink penetration into fibers and wash durability. A good DTG machine prioritizes even ink distribution and pretreatment control. It’s a comparatively slower process, but that’s fine because DTG’s competitive advantage is detail and soft hand feel on cotton and blended fabrics.

I’ve seen shops try to repurpose a UV flatbed for fabric printing (because UV cures instantly, right?). Those shirts look fine for the first wash. By the third, the print cracks and peels. The UV ink sits on top of the fabric fibers—it doesn’t bond into them. You’ve effectively made a sticker that’s going to fall off. We tested three such pieces in Q2 2023. All failed customer acceptance within 2 months. That cost us about $1,200 in re-orders and lost trust (note to self: we really should track that figure more formally).

DTF printers: the ‘transfer king’ for polyester and mixed-fabric runs

Our DTF printer—also from Mutoh—handles a completely different workload. Customers bring us polyester jackets, blended polo shirts, or materials where direct-to-garment won’t bond well. DTF’s advantage is that you print onto a film, apply hot-melt adhesive powder, and then heat-press onto the garment. The machine doesn’t need to spray pretreat. It does need to hold tension across the film roll consistently and maintain fine dot placement so that the tiny adhesive particles don’t clump and ruin the final image.

The best DTF machine is not the best UV flatbed machine—and vice versa. DTF printers need a robust take-up system for the film, a powder shaker station that doesn’t create dust in your print head zone, and, ideally, a conveyor oven that supports the right dwell time for the adhesive to melt evenly. A UV flatbed doesn’t have any of that. It doesn’t need it. But if you try to convert a flatbed to do DTF work, you’ll spend more on modifications and wasted materials than you’d spend just buying a dedicated DTF printer. I did a TCO comparison for a potential equipment consolidation in 2024—it would have cost us roughly 17% more annually to force a multi-use machine compared to keeping our dedicated DTF unit.

UV flatbed printers: where rigidity and instant cure matter most

Then there’s the UV flatbed. We have a Mutoh XpertJet 661UF for rigid substrates—signage, point-of-purchase displays, acrylic panels, aluminum composite, and even some packaging prototyping. Here, the game is registration accuracy across the flatbed and LED UV lamp control for consistent cure on different materials. You don’t want the print head to travel too long between passes, or you’ll see banding on glossy surfaces. You need a vacuum table that holds warped or thin substrates flat. You need UV pinning (partial cure) for white ink layers when printing on dark acrylic.

I have mixed feelings about some of the newer UV models that promise ‘flexible’ features like roll-to-roll attachments for printing on vinyl. Sure, you can do it. But you’re paying for an upgrade kit that adds complexity. And the throughput isn’t competitive with a dedicated roll-fed UV or eco-solvent machine. For our shop, the trade-off wasn’t worth it—our UV flatbed stays on rigid materials, and we use a separate Mutoh ValueJet 1638 for roll-fed banner and vinyl work. The numbers back that up: our roll-fed machine runs at about double the speed on vinyl for the same print quality.

The hidden cost of ‘one machine to rule them all’

I often see business owners or print managers get excited about a single machine that claims to handle DTG, DTF, and UV. The sales pitch sounds great: lower capital investment, less floor space, simpler training. I understand the appeal—I felt it myself in 2022 when we were expanding our capabilities.

But here’s what my experience over the last six years has taught me: the hidden costs of a multi-purpose machine almost always exceed the perceived savings.

Why? Three reasons:

  1. Changeover time. Switching from DTF to UV mode on a hybrid machine isn’t a 5-minute procedure. It often involves cleaning or swapping print heads, adjusting ink lines, purging one ink type to reduce cross-contamination, and recalibrating media feed. We researched three supposedly ‘multi-function’ printers in 2023. The shortest quoted changeover time was 45 minutes. Realistically, I’d budget 90 minutes per switch—and that’s time you’re not billing production.
  2. Ink system compromises. DTF and UV inks have fundamentally different chemical bases. DTF is hot-melt adhesive-based; UV is photo-reactive. In a shared machine, you can’t optimize the ink delivery for both. DTF ink might lose some adhesion property if the ink path isn’t perfectly sealed; UV might not cure as cleanly if the system isn’t optimized for UV. The result? ‘Good enough’ for both, but ‘excellent’ for neither.
  3. Service and repair complexity. A specialist machine has a specialist technician who knows exactly where to look when something goes wrong. A hybrid machine? You’re relying on someone who might understand both systems—or might understand neither well. In Q3 2024, when we had a head strike issue on our UV flatbed, our Mutoh service partner had the part in two days and the fix done in under four hours. They have a stock of UV-specific parts. They don’t carry DTF adhesives or powder handling components because they treat those as separate systems.

Responding to the big objections (and I’ve heard them all)

“But our shop is small—we can’t afford three printers.”

I get this. We were a 20-person shop four years ago. Here’s the counterpoint: you don’t need three printers the day you open your doors. You need to start with the technology that matches your core volume and either subcontract the rest or add equipment as the revenue justifies it. In 2021, we started with just DTG. We didn’t add DTF until we had at least two clients who specifically wanted polyester run consistency—and only after verifying that the subcontractor markup was eating 22% of our margin on those orders. We added UV flatbed in 2023 when our rigid signage orders hit 40% of total revenue. The timing wasn’t accidental; it was driven by cost tracking data.

“But vendors say their machine can do both—and they show me samples.”

Vendors are salespeople (no disrespect intended—I’ve worked with many good ones). But a factory demo on perfectly loaded media in ideal conditions is not your production reality. Ask for the TCO calculation over 12 months, assuming real-world changeovers, waste rates, and service call frequency. I built a simple spreadsheet for this—if you want, I can outline the inputs. But most vendors will not provide a spreadsheet model. When they don’t, I assume there’s something they’re not saying.

“What about Mutoh’s own lineup? Doesn’t it overlap?”

Fair question. Mutoh sells DTG automatic printers, DTF printers, UV flatbeds, eco-solvent printers, and printer-cutters. You could argue they’re offering a wide range, not specialization. But here’s the key difference: each product family is a dedicated engineering solution. The DTG automatic isn’t a repurposed UV flatbed. The XpertJet 661UF isn’t a retrofit DTF machine. Mutoh builds different print heads, different ink delivery architectures, and different curing systems for each application. That’s not a ‘generalist’ approach—it’s a portfolio of specialists. And I respect that more than a single machine that tries to bend itself into three shapes.

The bottom line: buy the machine that owns its niche

After six years of tracking invoices, testing equipment, and occasionally getting burned by assumptions that didn’t pan out (I once assumed “standard warranty” meant the same thing across two vendors—it did not—cost us $600 in a service call dispute), here’s my final take:

The best equipment purchase you’ll ever make is the one that does one print process exceptionally well. If your core work is DTG on cotton t-shirts, buy a dedicated Mutoh DTG automatic printer. If you run 70% polyester mixed media, go with DTF. If your shop is heavy on rigid signage and packaging prototyping, get the XpertJet 661UF.

And if a salesperson tells you their machine can do all three without compromise, ask them to put the 12-month TCO in writing. In my experience, they won’t. At least, that’s been true across the 8 vendor comparisons I’ve run since 2020.
