Scenario A: Fixed Installation in a Wide, Deep Venue

If you’re setting up a permanent system in a large club, theater, or house of worship that’s more than 40 feet deep, a line array is probably your best bet.

Line arrays are designed to throw sound evenly across long distances. The physics is straightforward: multiple speaker modules stacked vertically create a cylindrical wavefront that loses volume more slowly than a traditional point source (which spreads sound in a spherical pattern).

What I’ve learned the hard way: In Q1 2024, we reviewed a line array system for a 500-seat venue. The client had specified a lower-tier model to save budget. On paper, the specs looked fine. But during a blind test with our audio engineers, 83% identified the sound as ‘muddy’ at the back row compared to our recommended model. Scenario B: Portable or Multipurpose Applications

For a touring band, rental company, or anyone who moves their system between venues weekly, a point source speaker is often the smarter choice.

Point source speakers (like the HDL 30A from many manufacturers) are simpler to set up. One box, one pole mount, one amplifier channel. You don’t need a rigging crew or a technician to calculate array curvature. That’s a huge difference when you’re setting up in a different room every night.

They were tired of shipping heavy line array modules and paying for extra rigging labor. How to Decide Which One You Really Need

  1. Measure your room (or typical venue size). If the listening area is wider than 60 feet or deeper than 50 feet, start looking at line arrays. If it’s smaller, point source is simpler and cheaper.
  2. Consider your setup crew. Are you doing this yourself, or do you have a trained crew? A line array requires someone who understands aiming angles, inter-element angles, and FIR filtering. A point source can be set up by a competent stagehand with 30 minutes of training.
  3. Think about transport. Line array modules are heavy. A single large-format array module can weigh 80–120 lbs. Good point source speakers (like a 12-inch or 15-inch coaxial) are typically 40–60 lbs. If you’re flying with your system, weight matters.
  4. Don’t buy a line array because ‘it sounds better.’ A poorly deployed line array sounds worse than a good point source. I’ve rejected systems where the installers ignored vertical splay calculations. In one case, the distortion at the first balcony was 12 dB higher than the floor—that’s a 4x perceived loudness difference.

In my experience, about 60% of buyers overbuy on speaker complexity. They think they need a line array when a good point source would work perfectly.
