Dimension 3: Application Flexibility – One Machine, Many Jobs?
I've heard sales pitches claiming UV printers can do everything. They can't. But they do handle a wider range of substrates than eco-solvent. Let me break it down.
Eco-Solvent
Ideal for: Vinyl, banners, mesh, paper, adhesive films. Outdoor durability is excellent—some prints last 3–5 years without lamination. But you're limited to roll media (unless you get a printer with a roll-to-roll and a flatbed option, but that's rare).
UV-LED
Ideal for: Rigid substrates (foam board, acrylic, aluminum composite, PET-G, polycarbonate), plus some roll media (banners, canvas, film). This is a huge advantage if you do POP displays, retail signage, or ADA signage. You can print directly onto thicker materials without pre-coating.
Sublimation
Ideal for: Polyester fabrics, coated mugs, coated metal plates, and other dye-sublimation-ready surfaces. Not suitable for outdoor use without lamination, and limited to materials that can handle high heat.
What I tell my colleagues: If 80% of your jobs are on rigid substrates, UV is the clear winner. If you mostly do outdoor banners, eco-solvent is still the right tool. Sublimation is a niche super-power—if you're in that niche, nothing else works as well.
Dimension 4: Print Quality and Reliability

- Go with a Mutoh sublimation printer if: Your business is focused on textile printing—soft signage, sportswear, promotional mugs or metal plates. You already have a heat press or are willing to invest in one. It's a specialized tool, but for the right job, it's unmatched.
Also, don't forget to check current prices. Mutoh printers are listed at various price points depending on the model and dealer. For example, the Mutoh XpertJet 1462UF UV-LED flatbed printer can range from $45,000 to $55,000 depending on options and if you get the full service package. The ValueJet series starts at around $12,000 for a 64-inch eco-solvent printer. And a DTF printer starter kit price (for direct-to-film printing, a recent addition to Mutoh's line) might be around $15,000–$20,000 including the powder shaker.
At the end of the day, the best printer is the one that fits your actual workflow—not the one that looks best in a brochure. Take a hard look at the mix of jobs you're running today, and let that guide your decision.
