  3. Can you keep the machine busy at least 20 hours a week? If not, be honest about whether you're building a revenue stream or a service headache. A printer that sits for a week will cause more issues than one that runs daily.

That's the part most people skip. They pick a printer based on an impressive demo, then discover that the substrate, ink cost, and maintenance schedule all fight their actual workflow.

Final Reality Check

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The old "eco-solvent for signs, UV for rigid, and nothing else" framework has evolved. DTF changed the garment side. UV changed the short-run packaging side. The fundamentals haven't changed, but the execution has transformed.

My last piece of advice: ask the dealer for reference calls from shops running the same material you plan to run, and then call them. Don't ask "do you like it?" Ask "what did you not know going in?" The answer will tell you more than any spec sheet.

Looking back, I should have forced the dealer to put training and troubleshooting support in writing before my first installation. At the time, the salesperson said "we'll handle it." He wasn't lying—he was optimistic. The result was a week of calls that could have been avoided with a simple checklist. Now every contract I review includes operator training, sample runs, and a defined response window for printhead issues.
